Question: We have one PC on a network that has problems maintaining a steady connection to the internet using our LAN. I have done the following to get the connection up. Use the repair option for the local area connection. Sometimes this works. I have also disconected the local area connection then restarted it. Both work but only for 12 to 24 hrs then the connection to the internet is lost. In both cases the LAN connection will continue. The PC uses XP Professional.

Could this be caused by spyware or a virus that is sending too much data over this connection to the internet? Is there anything I can do about this problem? I have scanned this PC for viruses and spyware and it comes up clean. I'm thinking the traffic being sent too and from this PC is being backed up somehow causing communication errors. We do not see this problem on other PCs using our LAN. We have about 15 PCs on the LAN.
Answer: All the repair option does is release and renew the IP address. You might have some kind of IP conflict. Maybe and old printer or something has the same address. When it looses connection unplug the computer and see if you can ping it's address. If you can then that is what is going on. You might also try temporarily swapping network cards to see if this problem follows the card.
